# Choosing a World and Character

> Explore LOREKEEPER's 11 world genres, learn the difference between official and community worlds, and pick the right character for your adventure.

## Your World, Your Rules

Before every adventure begins, you make two key choices: the world you will explore and the character you will play. Both shape the entire experience.

## Available World Genres

LOREKEEPER offers 11 distinct genres, each with its own tone, setting, and narrative style:

* **Fantasy** -- Classic swords and sorcery. Dragons, magic, medieval kingdoms.
* **Dark Fantasy** -- Grittier and more dangerous. Think cursed lands and moral ambiguity.
* **Sci-Fi** -- Spaceships, alien civilizations, futuristic technology.
* **Cyberpunk** -- Neon-lit megacities, corporate dystopia, hacking, and augmentation.
* **Post-Apocalyptic** -- Survival in a broken world after catastrophe.
* And several more, including horror, steampunk, and mythological settings.

Each genre comes with pre-built official worlds designed by the LOREKEEPER team. Community worlds created by other players are also available in some genres.

<Tip>If this is your first time, **Mokgard** (fantasy) is the most beginner-friendly world with rich lore and balanced encounters.</Tip>

## Picking Your Character

You have two paths when creating a character:

### Pre-Made Heroes

These come fully configured with a name, backstory, race, class, spells, and equipment. They are designed to fit their world and are the fastest way to start playing.

### Archetypes

Choose a class archetype (warrior, mage, rogue, healer, etc.) and customize from there. You pick a race, adjust your backstory, and the AI DM fills in the rest.

## Race and Class in LOREKEEPER

* **Race** defines your character's species and may affect certain stats or narrative options (elf, dwarf, human, android, etc.).
* **Class** defines your combat role and abilities (fighter, sorcerer, ranger, etc.).

The combination of race and class creates a unique playstyle that the AI DM adapts to throughout your campaign.

<Note>You can create multiple characters across different campaigns. Experiment freely -- each world rewards different approaches.</Note>
