How Magic Works

In LOREKEEPER, characters with magical abilities maintain a spellbook containing all their learned spells. Magic is a powerful tool in both combat and exploration, but it requires careful mana management to use effectively.

Learning Spells

Characters learn spells through several paths:
  • Leveling up: Gain access to new spells as your character grows.
  • Story events: The DM may offer spell learning through mentors, ancient tomes, or magical discoveries.
  • Quest rewards: Completing certain quests can unlock unique spells.
Once learned, a spell is permanently added to your spellbook and can be cast whenever you have enough mana.

Mana Cost and Management

Every spell costs mana to cast. More powerful spells require more mana. Your mana pool regenerates over time or through rest, potions, and certain items. Running out of mana mid-combat means relying on weapons and items until you recover.
Keep a few mana potions in your inventory for long encounters. Running dry at a critical moment can turn the tide against you.

Spell Schools

Spells are organized into schools that define their nature and effects. Schools include categories like elemental magic, healing, illusion, necromancy, and more. Each school has its own flavor and strategic role.

Casting in Combat vs Exploration

  • In combat: Casting a spell uses your turn action. The DM resolves the spell’s effect, including damage, healing, or condition application, using dice mechanics.
  • In exploration: Spells can solve puzzles, reveal hidden paths, charm NPCs, or provide utility. There is no turn pressure, but mana is still consumed.
The AI DM adapts spell descriptions to your world genre. A fire spell in a fantasy world and an energy blast in a sci-fi setting may share mechanics but feel completely different.
